To our entrepreneur community,
Friends, these are unprecedented times, and what we know for certain is that over the next several weeks and months, many entrepreneurs will lose their business, and no amount of marketing or leveraging will be able to stop it from happening, but, some of those businesses can survive. Today, I am hoping that my advice can help those entrepreneurs stay afloat.
Here is my advice to the small-business industries being hardest hit from the COVID-19 Pandemic & Recession.
1. I own a digital service agency, what can I do?
If you have a business that supplies services such as graphic design, web design, or digital consulting, the weeks ahead will be filled with hardship as your clients slash their marketing budgets in order to survive. During these times, you must use your digital expertise to help your clients stay afloat, this could mean finding Government funding related to helping businesses fund services that you offer such as a Federal grant that pays your client in order for them to hire an agency to build a website (meaning you!). You must also create a roadmap for your digital services agency that investigates what kind of digital-based services are needed during these times such as helping a restaurant go online for food delivery if they had to shut down dining-in. The best thing you can do is keep finding digital solutions to the brand new issues coming out daily that are affecting a vast majority of businesses, do not be afraid to go out of your safe zone!
2. I own a restaurant, what can I do?
Restaurants are hard hit by the current recession and pandemic. Your restaurant should focus on food delivery with as small of a staff as possible in order to reduce any chance of anyone getting sick. Put your restaurant on DoorDash, Uber Eats, Foodora, and any other delivery service in your area and offer discounts in order to get good reviews. Without reviews, you will not have many delivery customers. You must also let your customers know that you are taking enhanced precautions to ensure your food and premises are sanitized appropriately.
3. I am in retail, what can I do?
We are currently experiencing an annihilation of retail sales due to public quarantine and social distancing measures. Now is the time to shift your focus online! You must create and bring attention to online sales. If you can not afford a web designer, you now have time to learn how to create an easy Shopify store and begin getting those much-needed sales.

Please be aware that my potential solutions above do not work in every case, these times are particularly tough with a combined pandemic and recession, do NOT feel like you lost if you lose your business. Entrepreneurs have the incredible ability to create even when all hope seems lost. We are currently living in a time in which there will be both tragic losses and incredible creations. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes from A Tale of Two Cities, Chapter 1:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way”
We will get through this, together.
